Sundowns stumble against Baroka

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns were left frustrated and handed the advantage back to Kaizer Chiefs after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Baroka at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday evening.

A win for Sundowns would have seen them move top of the Absa Premiership table after leaders Chiefs lost 1-0 to Bidvest Wits earlier on during the day at FNB Stadium.

But it was a bitter end for Pitso Mosimane’s side as they remain in second place, level with ‘Amakhosi’ on 53 points but inferior on goal difference.

Ananias Gebhardt scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute to hand Baroka a hard-fought victory.

‘Bakgakga’ move three points clear of the relegation zone in 13th place with only two matches remaining in the PSL Bio Bubble.

Chiefs head into the penultimate round on pole position as wins against Baroka FC and Chippa United respectively will likely lead them to the promise land.

On the other hand, Sundowns will have to beat relegation-threatened Polokwane City and Black Leopards respectively to keep their chances of defending their title.
