Swallows FC: A collective approach

The township of SOWETO is on the brink of welcoming its own football giant back into the ABSA Premiership. Swallows FC is currently perched at the summit of the GladAfrica Championship, tied on points with Ajax Cape Town, but having a better goal difference.

As the ‘Dube Birds’ welcome Tshakuma Tsha Mandivhatshila at the Makhulong Stadium on Sunday at 3pm, this publication takes a clever look at the roleplayers in this unfolding possibility.

1. Club leadership
The importance of sound professional leadership can be clearly observed with the new Swallows management. Under the chairmanship of David Mogashoa, ‘The Beautiful Birds’ have a respectable business and a capable leader who has years of experience in business.

Mogashoa’s main confidante and meticulous partner is Panyaza Lesufi, a corporate governance guru and a proven cadre in delivering sustainable education results in the Gauteng province. The pair have assembled a great team, from the players and the technical.

2. Technical director
Swallows is one of the few professional clubs that understand institutional governance. The team employed former Kaizer Chiefs goal machine, Fani Madida as the Technical Director at the beginning of the season.

Madida is tasked to oversee the success of the technical department and offer professional advice to the Head Coach, Brandon Truter. As the technical leader, Madida has provided a comfortable cushion for Truter to consult and support the coaches work all the time.

3. Emerging technician
Coach Truter joins the famous list of young coaches to emerge in our country, the likes of Molefi Ntseki, Kwanele Kopo, Thabo Senong and David Notoane. ‘Brakkies’ as he is commonly known in the football fraternity, epitomizes courage, talent, football understanding and an eagerness to continuously learn.

His Swallows team play with structured freedom, clear tactical blueprint and a provide an enviable DNA for most teams in the GladAfrica league.

4. Perfect player blend
Swallows have the experienced players like Vuyo Mere and Lebogang Mokwena, who have won leagues whilst playing for some of the best clubs in the country. In addition, the club also saw it fit to recruit some of the exciting young players.

This perfect blend of experience and youthful brigade, have propelled the team to play with the right intensity and speed, whilst calculating the tactical movements and intelligence needed at the right moments.

5. Chiefs partnership
At the beginning of the season, Swallows approached Chiefs for the services of some of their bright young talent. In came, Given Thibedi, Ayanda Rorwana, Sizwe Thwala and Itumeleng Shopane. Out of the loaned players, Thibedi has been phenomenal, in displaying technical proficiency and tactical understanding suited to Coach Truter’s playing approach.

This forward-thinking from the Swallows leadership has demonstrated a superior business mastery, by aligning their brand with successful entities like Chiefs.
