Swallows head coach Brandon Truter has hailed the character of his team after they withstood a Maritzburg United fightback to comfortably win 2-0 in a DStv Premiership clash at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday night.

‘The Dube Birds’ stretched their unbeaten run in the 2020/21 campaign to seven matches with Ruzaigh Gamildien netting a brace on the night against ‘The Team of Choice’.

Truter scooped the October/November Coach of the Month award as a result of the club’s impressive start following their promotion from the GladAfrica Championship last season.

“We knew it was going to be a tough one. We knew definitely it was going to be a fight with the coach of Ernst Middendorp’s quality coming in, there will be a chase, and there will be a structure and it was there,” said Truter.

“They gave us a lot of problems with the set places as well, balls in the box. At the end of the day, it took one direct ball from the keeper to get us a penalty, then, of course, the second ball as well they had to come out and they had to open up once we took the lead.

“So yeah, it was a game of very few chances. They created the vibe in the set place with us as well. So a good result, fight from the boys as well because it was a fight at the end. We came away with the three points,” added Truter.

“Sometimes it’s not about nice football and against Maritzburg because of the lock of position, we knew it was going to be a fight. Yes, we did play in patches, we did open them up as well but at the end of that it was a fight, we went toe-to-toe and we created the chance that count.”

Despite the victory, the ‘Birds’ remained second on the league standings, two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while the ‘Team of Choice’ also remain 16th on the log.
