Former Moroka Swallows winger Joseph ‘Duku Duku’ Makhanya believes the continuous player additions at his former club is nothing unusual.
To date, the ‘Dube Birds’ have signed over 14 players with a few expected to be announced before the beginning of the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season.
Makhanya, who played for the club between 2011 and 2013, says it was necessary that the Premiership newcomers rebuild the team, in order to compete at the highest level.
“Obviously they had to rebuild the team judging by the way they finished last season,” the 39-year-old told FARPost.
“They borrowed a lot of players during their GladAfrica Championship campaign so by the end of the season they didn’t have players so they needed to sign players, and again it’s PSL it’s no longer GladAfrica so they needed to sign quality players for them to maintain or sustain their status.
“I think on their side it’s not necessarily a situation of trying to compete, maybe they are trying to save the status and build a team as they go along.
“But with the kind of players they have signed I think maybe a top 8 position if they work hard, then yes they can be guaranteed a top 8 position.
The confirmed signings at Swallows so far are; Sammy Seabi, Kamo Mahlatsi, Daniel Gozar, Wandisile Letlabika, Thabo Matlaba, Thabo Mosadi, Thela Ngobeni, Kagiso Malinga, Ruzaigh Gamildien, Moeketsi Makhanya, Musa Nyatama, Joseph Mhlongo, Njabulo Ngcobo and Phetso Maphanga.
