Usually, teams that gain promotion from the second-tier league to the Premiership fight for survival and struggle in South Africa’s topflight, but that’s not the case with Swallows.
Swallows, the 2019/20 GladAfrica champions have surprised friend and foe with their enterprising and winning football this season and lie second on the DStv Premiership table tied on 23 points with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns
After 12 matches, the Soweto-based side remains unbeaten with an impressive record of seven wins and five draws.
However, on Saturday afternoon, the ‘Dube Birds’, the league dark horses face a huge challenge against Mamelodi Sundowns in a top-of-the-table match at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
Sundowns have failed to score in drawn matches against SuperSport United and Bloemfontein Celtic, while Swallows missed out on an opportunity to go top of the log standings after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Chippa United on Wednesday.
“We have 48 hours until our next game, but we have to get ready‚ we have to be prepared mentally and physically because that’s what is going to count,” said Swallows head coach Brandon Truter.
“It’s a tough ask to go into Saturday’s game with opponents who have rested an extra day.
“We struggled to put our best XI on the park against Chippa‚ but the players are looking forward to the match against Sundowns because we are fighters. They have a good mentality and hopefully, we will see fireworks on the day.
“We remain undefeated but looking at our next opponent‚ you would have wanted to get all the three points against Chippa. But it was not to be.”
Truter, the man who has masterminded Swallows’ outstanding start to the campaign on their return to the Premiership went on to state that they missed influential captain Lebohang Mokoena against Chippa.
“Sammy Seabi came in for Lebo and did very well‚ but the captain has that X-factor because he doesn’t panic that much and knows how to manage the game,” he said.
“He has been around the block long enough and it will be a welcome return if he is ready to play on Saturday. We are working around the clock to get everybody ready for our next game.”
