The Swedish Allsvenskan is finally kicking off this coming weekend and a number of Mzansi’s stars will be involved.

Varbergs BoIS will be participating in their second campaign in the top-flight after managing to finish in 11th spot in the log standings last season. After acquiring the services of Ryan Moon and Dean Solomons, there are now five South African players in the books of the club.

KEANIN AYER

Ayer has spent the last two and a half years at the club making 60 league appearances in the process. The 21-year-old played a crucial role in the club’s promotion to the Allsvenskan in 2019 playing 29 games out of a possible 30.

He made 23 league appearances last season scoring once and assisting another two strikes.

LUKE LE ROUX

In his first season abroad, the former Amajita captain received rave reviews after putting in some impressive performances in Sweden. His manager Joakim Persson singled out the midfielder for praise saying he is destined for the big leagues in Europe.

Le Roux played 21 league games last season and missed out on the last few games because of passport complications. The 21-year-old returned in time for pre-season and he is ready to go.

TASHREEQ MATTHEWS

The 2020 campaign was the winger’s first full season in senior football. Last season, the 20-year-old played 18 league games scoring once and assisting another three strikes.

It’s been a bumpy few years for the Ajax Cape Town development product. He moved abroad to join Borussia Dortmund where he played Uefa Youth League football before subsequent loans to FC Utrecht and Helsingborg in Sweden.

After playing a few Allsvenskan games while on loan at Helsingborg, he caught the eye of Persson who later offered him a permanent contract at the club in January 2020.

RYAN MOON & DEAN SOLOMONS

This will be the duo’s first season in Sweden’s top-flight after recently signing three-year deals with the club.

Varbergs begin their season with a home game against Mjallby on Sunday afternoon.
