The 2019-20 Absa Premiership turned out to be another season to remember.

While Kaizer Chiefs appeared on course to win their first title in six years, Mamelodi Sundowns spoilt the party for the ‘Phefeni Glamour Boys’, right at the death.

FARPost breaks down the campaign using numbers…

– With victory on the last day, Pitso Mosimane’s charges won their third successive League title.

– The champions Sundowns and second placed Chiefs will represent SA in the CAF Champions League, while Orlando Pirates (3rd place) and Bloem Celtic (Nedbank Cup finalists to play Downs) will participate in the Confederation Cup. Nedbank Cup winners qualify for the Confed Cup and with Downs already in the Champions League, Celtic qualify for the Confed Cup by virtue of being in the final of Ke Yona.

– Pitso Mosimane, the former Bafana Bafana coach, has now won five League titles, making him the most decorated coach, in the PSL.

– Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana boasts seven League titles, alongside Denis Onyango and Anthony Laffor – the most by any player.

– There were eight players who scored ten goals or more during the season. The last time there were eight or more players scoring 10+ league goals in the #AbsaPrem was in 2010-11 & Bradley Grobler is the only player to get 10+ on both occasions.

– It’s Sundowns’ 10th title in the PSL era (since the 1996-97 season).

– Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Highlands Park played twelve draws during the season, the most by any side.

– Ronwen Williams of SuperSport United kept thirteen clean sheets, the most by any goalkeeper. He played every minute, just like last season. Incredible.

– The number of goals scored by Gabadinho Mhango (Orlando Pirates) and Peter Shalulile (Highlands Park) to finish as joint top scorers.

– The number of wins achieved by both champions Sundowns and second-placed Chiefs.

– Chippa United scored just eighteen times, which is the lowest in the League.

– The number of goals conceded by relegated Polokwane City and Black Leopards, who are in the Promotion Playoffs.

– Chiefs scored the most goals during the season.

– The number of points Sundowns needed to win the title. Even last season, Downs won it with 59 points, beating Pirates by two.

– The total number of goals by all teams during the season, at an average of 1.05 per match. By comparison, the 2018-19 season averaged 1.1 goals per match (543 scored).
