The official Bundesliga 2019-20 Team of the Season has been announced, featuring a couple of players we could be seeing at the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United next season.
Bayern Munich remain the team to beat after winning both the title and German Cup, although there have been signs of promise from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
We’ve rounded up the competition’s Team of the Season, as voted for by the players themselves.
Bayern have already secured the signing of the goalkeeper already dubbed The Next Manuel Neuer in Schalke’s Alexander Nubel, but the 23-year-old still has a huge task on his hands to displace the OG as No.1. Neuer’s future at Bayern was subject to spurious speculation earlier this season but the 34-year-old has stayed focus to keep the most clean sheets in the Bundesliga this term.
The 2019/20 campaign will be Hakimi’s last season in Bundesliga for the foreseeable as his form on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Real Madrid over the past two years has earned the full-back a €40million move to Inter. Hakimi has played at both sides of the defence and also at left and right wing for Dortmund this season, but his best position remains at right-back. Dortmund’s loss is most definitely Inter’s gain.
Hummels’ return to Dortmund may have ended in the frustration of watching former club Bayern lift yet another title, but the 31-year-old has proven his worth after being re-signed in a club-record €37million – and has clearly enjoyed the experience of being back in the yellow and black shirt. “We had some games this season that I endlessly enjoyed, like against Inter, against Barcelona, Paris, also Gladbach in the Bundesliga,” he said in March. “I came back for these moments, ones where I go home after a game and am just euphoric.”
Bayern’s equivalent to a Swiss army knife, Alaba has regularly played at left-back and defensive midfield but has switched to centre-back this season and, as ever, made it look far too easy. Having a centre-back who can do this is never a bad thing…
Alaba’s switch to centre-back has allowed Davies to shine at left-back, earning him a whopping 80.4% of the vote for the position. The teenager himself is more associated with playing in a different position after being signed as a winger from Vancouver Whitecaps. But the Canada international is proving one of the most exciting young players in Europe – the prospect of him linking up with Leroy Sane down the left flank next season is frightening.
In a season dominated by speculation around his future at Dortmund, Sancho has managed to block out all the noise around him and produce another ridiculous campaign. Sancho has reached double figures for both goals and assists for two seasons in a row. Indeed, only four players have provided more goal contributions in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
Picked as the anchorman in this midfield, Kimmich has now won the Bundesliga title in all five of his seasons at Bayern. The 25-year-old played every minute of Bayern’s 2018/19 Bundesliga campaign and missed just one game this term. He also scored the stunning goal which helped Bayern halt Dortmund’s title challenge, putting his side seven points clear at the top of the table.
A name you’re going to be seeing a lot of this summer, Havertz’s performances for Bayer Leverkusen have made him one of the hottest properties in Europe, with Chelsea most notably linked with a move for the attacking midfielder. Still just 21, Havertz scored 17 goals in all competitions and has also provided eight assists, helping Leverkusen reach the German Cup final in the process.
If Havertz does join Chelsea, he will be playing alongside Germany team-mate Werner, who has agreed a move to Stamford Bridge despite being widely tipped to join Liverpool. Picked on the left wing in this side, Werner has scored a career-best 34 goals in all competitions this season.
Well, where do you start? Haaland only moved to the Bundesliga in January yet quickly made himself a shoo-in for this side. Eleven starts, 13 goals, and still just 19 years old. Scary.
Not to make this a contest between Haaland and Lewandowski, but: 31 starts, 34 goals. Lewandowski received the highest proportion of votes in the entire team with 87.6%.
