The 2020/21 best overseas-based SA XI

FARPost’s international office has been monitoring the progress of South African footballers abroad. A number of players have been doing well this season for their clubs, we look at the best performing stars so far this season. 

Starting XI (4-4-2)

BRAD NORMAN (24, Goalkeeper)

 

Since joining Argentinian side CS Independiente, the 24-year-old goalkeeper has been doing well for the club in the Primera Nacional Division. 

KEANIN AYER (20, right back)

The Swedish Allsvenskan league has finished and Ayer played yet another important role in the right back position for the club. This was Varbergs BoiS’ first season in the top flight and the 20-year-old played 23 league games out of a possible 30 in the 2020 campaign. 

NKANYISO SHINGA (20, left back)

 

Since his move from Vitoria Setubal, Shinga has established himself as a regular in the Portuguese third division with Pinhalnovense. The gifted KZN academy graduate is in his first season in senior football, but he has fitted in perfectly at the club as he looks to rise up the ranks in Portugal. 

BRADLEY CROSS (20, left centre back)

 

Cross was named captain of the Newcastle U23 side just two weeks after signing for the club. He has established himself as a regular in England’s Premier League 2 with the reserve side. 

THIBANG PHETE (26, right centre back) 

A Bafana Bafana internationalPhete has been on the rise in Portugal since moving to Lisbon-based SAD Belenenses where he won five Man of the Match awards in 2020 and was named in the league’s Team of the Week four times. The Stars of Africa graduate is the spine behind the club’s defence this season. 

SPHEPHELO SITHOLE (21, defensive midfielder)

 

‘Yaya’ has established himself as a regular member of the starting XI at Belenenses. He has played seven Primeira Liga games and started the previous six games for the club. This is the central defensive midfielder’s first season in senior football. 

LUKE LE ROUX (20, defensive midfielder)

 

In his first season in Europe, the former Amajita captain played 21 league games out of a possible 30. Le Roux established himself as the spine of Varbergs BoiS in the midfield as he guided the club to an 11th place finish in their first season in the Swedish top-flight. 

KOBAMELO KODISANG (21, left wing)

  

After scoring his 5th goal of the season this past weekend, Kodisang now has a goal contribution of 10 goals this season. He has scored five goals and assisted a further five for Braga’s B team. 

GIFT LINKS (22, right wing)

 

Links is a regular in Denmark’s top-flight with AGF Aarhus. The former Cape Town City winger has scored three goals and assisted another two strikes in 10 Superliga games. 

PERCY TAU (26, second striker role) 

In 15 league games for RSC Anderlecht, Tau scored four goals and laid an assist for another in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. On Sunday night, the 26-year-old made his first appearance for his parent club Brighton and Hove Albion who recently recalled him from his loan in Belgium. 

LUTHER SINGH (23, striker)

 

Singh has played in all 13 league games for Pacos Ferreira in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this season. He has scored one goal and assisted one more halfway through this campaign. The Stars of Africa graduate has also worked his way into the senior national team under coach Molefi Ntseki.
