We’ve now reached the business end of the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season and Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler has revealed that 42 points is his side’s new target.
At the beginning of the season, the initial target for Tinkler was to reach 30 points and avoid relegation.
“We just take it game by game, we said that at the beginning of the season is important for us to hit the 30-point mark, once we do that where we finish will depend on us,” said Tinkler.
“And if we can get to around 42 points as quick as possible that should almost guarantee top 8 which is what is important for us.”
‘The Team of Choice’ only need six points in their remaining seven games to reach their target.
Maritzburg last season finished in 15th position and avoided the axe by winning the PSL/NFD playoffs to keep their South African top-flight football status.
In the current season, Maritzburg are currently fifth on the log standings with 36 points from 23 matches, 9 wins, 9 draws and 5 losses.
“We can play without pressure and without stress and take every game that we play as an important game irrespective of who the opponent are.”
“We are on 36 [points] even though they others must still play but we are creating that gap which is important, added the Maritzburg mentor.
In their next League encounter, the Pietermaritzburg based side will face Polokwane City at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night. Kickoff at 20:00.
