The world might have to wait for Caster Semenya debut

It seems South Africans and the rest of the world might have to wait a bit longer to watch their golden girl Caster Semenya making her official debut as a football player.

The two-time Olympic 800m champion was unveiled as a new signing by newly promoted Women’s National League side JVW FC in September last year.

But with the completion of the National League hanging by a thread, the 2020/21 season might also be delayed unless the current season is cancelled altogether.

Speaking to FARPost, JVW founder and Coach Janine van Wyk said everyone in the club including Semenya remains positive and looking forward to playing football soon.

“Caster is just another member of the club and she too has adapted and played her part of keeping mentally strong and fit. All members of the club have been coping well and looking forward to return again to the playing field soon,” said the Banyana Banyana captain.

“I am not giving her (Caster) any tips as she is currently doing her own fitness program that she is used to doing alongside a football specific program that’s been set for all the players at the club to complete on a daily basis,” She said.

Van Wyk also spoke on the exhilaration of the promotion to the National League for the club formed in 2012.

“It’s a massive achievement for the club. Being the first team to actually qualify for the newly launched National League that I have been waiting to happen for almost my whole career. It’s an incredible feeling and something that we are all extremely looking forward to, to participate in,” added the 32-year-old.

“Currently there are no signings that we are going to make. We are a development club and I look to my highly talented development players before signing players from outside. I believe a good team should consist of a perfect balance between youth and experience,” she concluded.

Some of the names currently in the books of the Gauteng-based side include Mamello Makhabane, Robyn Moodaly, Yolula Tsawe, Noma Ntsibande, Nompumelelo Nyandeni and Amanda Dlamini.
