Thendo Mukumela: Venda-born record footballer


The area of Venda in Limpopo is synonymous and blessed with great footballers all round.

Rodney Ramagalela and Erick Mathoho are notably some of the best crop of football stars to come out the region, and have gone on to dizzy heights in their careers.

However, none of these footballers including the ones that we did not mention here, matches the record of one Thendo Mukumela.

In this piece, FARPost Investigative Unit takes a sharp look at this talented Venda born and bred product, Mukumela.

1. Early beginnings

Thendu Mukumela was born on the 30th January 1998 in Ngwenani, Limpopo. After successful spells in various youth teams in his hometown, he was spotted by coaches Ike Pula and Justice.

The coaches had a chance to work with Mukumela in two projects namely, First National Bank (FNB) Under-15 Tournament and the Provincial Under-15 Championship.

2. Mukumela at Sundowns

After impressing at various tournaments at youth level, Mukumela joined the Sundowns Youth Academy. At Sundowns he received the best youth development and naturally progressed through the age groups from Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and the reserve team of the club.

He played for the Sundowns MDC team alongside the likes of Percy Tau and Siphelele Mkhulise with admirable distinction.

3. National representation

Mukumela has an enviable record of having played for all national teams in South Africa. He has accumulated 6 caps at Under-17 and 11 caps at Under-20 level.

With the Under-23 national team, Mukumela has garnered 5 caps and is certainly in the preliminary list of Under-23 national coach, David Notoane.

At senior national team (Bafana Bafana) he has accumulated 6 caps whilst playing in the COSAFA Senior Championship and friendly matches.

4. World Cup experience

Adding to his 6 caps in the National Under-17 team, is the experience he gained playing at the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in Chile.

In this tournament, Mukumela was outstanding at centreback alongside the likes of Reeve Frosler and Kobamelo Kodisang, in the Molefi Ntseki-coached side.

5. Multifunctional player

Mukumela made his debut for Bafana Bafana on the 2nd July 2017 playing at rightback. However, through his youth development, Thendo has the capacity to play at centreback, central midfield and striking positions.

This ability to play at various positions makes him a must to have for many coaches and clubs, as Mukumela is a modern multifunctional player capable of playing anywhere depending on the coaches needs and tactical application .

As the newly-formed Cape Town Spurs navigate a difficult terrain in the Glad Africa Championship, they will need Mukumela’s ability and prowess.

But, with experience and talent expect him to play in the PSL or Europe in the near future.
