Chippa United will play host to Cape Town City at Orlando Pirates on Friday afternoon in an Absa Premiership clash and Diamond Thopola is bracing for a revenge-minded City side.
The Chippa defender Thopola says ‘The Citizens’ will be fired up at the thought of avenging the 1-0 defeat they suffered when the two sides met in the first round at the Athlone Stadium.
“Ya, we will face a very good, well-coached team. They are a point above us on the log. So, it’s going be a very interesting encounter,” said Thopola. Kick-off at 15:30.
“We won the first-round encounter away from home. So, they are going to come out with guns blazing and we have to be ready for that.
“The preparations have been going well under the new normal. The guys have done their best and the spirit is high in the camp. We are looking forward to a great game on Friday,” he added.
Chippa are only three points above relegation in 12th place with 26 points and Lehlohonolo Seema will be looking to endear himself to ‘Chilli Boys’ with a positive result in his first game in charge.
Meanwhile, City head coach Jan Olde Riekerink is worried about the players’ fitness ahead of the restart amid the coronavirus pandemic
“I hope we have done enough to be prepared for the first game. The only thing you can never copy is [playing] the opponent,” said Riekerink, ahead of City’s first game in five months.
City are 10th on the log standings, four points behind eighth-placed Highlands Park.
“That will be the biggest problem for all the teams. You can think you are fit, but ‘game fit’ is something that nobody can train for. You can play against each other, but that is not the same,” concluded Riekerink.
