Maritzburg United tactician Erik Tinkler has bemoaned his team’s lack of confidence when taking spot kicks.
The Team of Choice have been awarded three penalties in the Absa Premiership this season, but failed to convert any of them.
During their 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday, Maritzburg were handed an opportunity to take the lead in the second half when Willard Katsande fouled Keagan Buchanan in the box, but Daylon Claasen’s penalty was saved by Daniel Akpeyi.
“He missed the last he missed (referring to Judas Moseamedi missing a penalty)… yeah it’s difficult Jeremy (Brockie) missed, but I always look at first and foremost when we practise them in training it’s difficult to recreate the pressure a situation that you’ve found yourself in front of this massive crowd,” said the former Bafana Bafana tough tackling midfielder.
“So in training it’s very, very easy you know but I look at the guys who are confident enough to fetch the ball and wanna go take it and I think in all cases that was the scenario. Jeremy did it, Judas did it and now Daylon you know, I don’t think Judas would have wanted to take it because of his past experience,” Tinkler added.
