Maritzburg United head coach Eric Tinkler is delighted with the effort and commitment of his players, following their performances in the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season.
But he’s admitted that it was a bitter-sweet finish in the PSL Bio-Bubble.
In their six matches in the Bio-Bubble, Maritzburg endured a poor run of form as they only managed to secure three points from a possible 18, dropping from fifth to seventh on the log standings.
But Tinkler’s men had achieved their objective for the season of a top 8 finish.
“We were having such an incredible season up until the lockdown. Had the season continued, I believe we could have finished even higher than seventh,” said Tinkler.
“If you had to ask me at the beginning of the season would I be happy to end seventh, the answer would obviously be yes.
“Considering where we were and where we came from, I think it’s absolutely a fantastic achievement for us to have finished seventh,” added the Maritzburg mentor.
Even though Tinkler was left to rue Maritzburg’s disappointing end to the campaign, a seventh-placed finish for a side that had to battle it out in the promotion-relegation play-offs in the 2018/19 season is a commendable effort, which has secured the KwaZulu-Natal outfit a place in next season’s MTN8.
“I’m extremely proud of everybody at the club for the type of season we’ve had,” concluded Tinkler.
