Fadlu Davids insists that Orlando Pirates are not talking about challenging for the Absa Premiership title despite being third on the log standings and six points behind leaders and their opponents on Saturday in the Soweto Derby, Kaizer Chiefs.
“We are not even thinking about the title race, is the biggest mistake we can make because the teams are so far ahead of us and have games in hands, is not for us to even think about the title race now, we are building towards next season,” said the Pirates assistant coach at the pre-Soweto Derby press conference on Tuesday.
Under the leadership of Josef Zinnbauer along with his assistant, Davids, Pirates have won six consecutive League games and seven in their last eight encounters.
“We are not talking about the title race at all, the title race is for Kaizer Chiefs, [Mamelodi] Sundowns Bidvest Wits,” added Davids.
“Our new coach came in, we are focusing game by game, that’s how we have approached all our games so far and that’s how we approach this game,” insisted Davids.
“We have 9 matches remaining, since the coach [Zinnbauer] came, we drew one and won the rest and of course you want to continue with that form, is not a secret you want to win every match. We are not going into the game relaxing because we have won a couple of games in a row.
“We know the importance of the game for the supporters, for the pride, the badge but it is still 3 points at stake and we will approach the game to try and get those 3 points, that’s it,” admitted Davids.
The Soweto Derby will be played at FNB Stadium on Saturday, kickoff at 15:30
