Fading Nigeria giants Enyimba will miss the experience of mercurial striker Victor Mbaoma when they play Sudan’s Al-Merrikh SC in the CAF Champions League.
The 24-year-old, who terrorised TS Galaxy during the two-legged Confederation Cup campaign last year, is out nursing a knee injury.
The injury comes as a blow to Enyimba, who have traveled to Sudan for the first-leg of the first round tie at the Al Hilal Stadium in Omdurman on Wednesday, without Cryil Olisema and Imoh Obok.
However, Enyimba coach Fatai Osho believes there is no reason. Mbaoma, a key player for the Enyimba, misses the clash due to an ankle injury, while Olisema and Obok did not travel with the team to Sudan.
“Mbaoma is a player any team will miss if he is out. We know how important he is for us after what he did against Rahimo.
“But like you know, the team is not built around one player or more and we will always find a way to get the best out of the squad without them.
“We have many other players who will deliver and ensure we come out tops.”
Enyimba are Nigeria’s only campaigner in the Champions League after Plateau United crashed out in the preliminary round.
Mbaoma was recruited from Nigerian topflight side Remo Stars in 2018 and is regarded as one of his side’s outstanding players.
He scored four goals for Akwa United in the Uyo-based side’s ill-fated campaign in the 2018 Total CAF Confederation Cup, where they exited in the penultimate round before the group stage.
