A number of Nigerian strikers have been doing very well for their respective clubs abroad.
KRC Genk forward Paul Onuachu is the top goal scorer in Belgium while the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen and Simy Nwankwo have also been in hot form in recent months.
Onuachu has been unstoppable in the Belgian Pro League this season. The 26-year-old struggled in his first season (2019/20) scoring nine goals in 22 Pro League games.
After adapting to the style of play and intensity of the league, the former FC Midtjylland striker started the 2020/21 season well scoring 10 goals in his first 10 appearances. Last weekend, he netted his 31st goal of the campaign as Genk defeated Club Brugge 3-0 at the Cristal Arena.
His goal scoring prowess earned him a recall to the Super Eagles national team camp where he netted two goals in two games.
After a slow start to the season, the 22-year-old has turned the corner at Italian Serie A side Napoli.
Osimhen initially struggled to gel with the team due to recurring injuries and sickness, but since returning from international duty in March, the striker has been unstoppable. The former LOSC Lille star has netted eight goals in the past 11 games for Gennaro Gattuso’s men with his recent goals coming in a 4-1 win against Spezia last weekend.
He has scored 10 goals in 21 league appearances this season.
Despite not being prolific at the start of the season, coach Gernot Rohr has kept faith with his number one striker and he recently finished as a joint top goal scorer in the Afcon 2021 qualifiers.
Iheanacho has established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League this season. The 24-year-old struggled to get regular game time at the King Power Stadium, but he has turned things around in 2021.
The Manchester City product has scored 11 Premier League goals and they have all come in 2021. He has also steered the Foxes to the final of the FA Cup where they will face high-flying Chelsea on Saturday evening.
Crotone have been relegated to the second division of Italian football, but their Nigerian striker Simy Nwankwo will be pleased with his performance in the 2020/21 campaign.
Nwankwo has scored 19 league goals in 35 Serie A games so far this season and reports coming out of Italy suggest that he has a few top-flight clubs interested in his services.
Once in the books of Serie A side AS Roma, Umar was rated amongst the most promising young players of his generation in 2015.
The lanky forward struggled to get regular game time in Italy and made a move to Serbian Superliga side Partizan Belgrade where he scored six goals in 10 appearances.
Spanish Segunda Liga side Almeria signed the 24-year-old on a five-year-deal. His 18 goals in 34 games have steered Almeria to third place in the league with 66 points from 38 points.
Nigeria national team coach Rohr also recently re-called the striker to his squad for the 2021 Afcon qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho.
