Sammy Troughton has returned to University of Pretoria in a rather different capacity.
The well-traveled mentor last coached in Pretoria when he was in charge of Pretoria Callies FC, with whom he won promotion to the GladAfrica Championship.
In a lengthy statement both the club and Troughton voiced their excitement in reuniting after some years.
“The University of Pretoria is happy to announce the return of Samuel Troughton to the club in the capacity of Technical Director.
“The recommendation and decision to appoint Sammy, as he is affectionately called, comes after a review of the 2020/2021 season.
“Sammy has coached for a number of teams both in the GladAfrica Championship and the Premier League and brings with him extensive experience in terms of promotional football.
“He played a critical role in AmaTuks’ qualification to the PSL promotional play-offs in the 2007/08 season and eventual promotion to the Premier League in the 2011/12 season.”
“Tlisane Motaung who was instrumental in bringing Sammy back to the club remains the Head Coach of the first team and Sammy’s role is to redirect the club’s development system and to also mentor the Head Coach and technical team.”
