Two hat-tricks, 13 goals as Zambia suffer heavy defeat


Africa’s only representatives Zambia suffered a 10-3 deafet by the Netherlands in their opening match of the Olympic women’s football tournament on Wednesday.

Vivianne Miedema scored four goals, Lieke Martens added two, while Shanice van de Sanden, Jill Roord, Lineth Beerensteyn and Victoria Pelova netted the others for the Dutch.

Barbra Banda scored all three for the Copper Queens.

The 21-year-old is the first female African to score a hat-trick at the Olympics.

The Tokyo Games are the first Olympics for both nations, who are in Group F.

Zambia will now face China in their next match on Saturday.
