Villareal coach Unai Emery is pleased to have Samuel Chukwueze back in the squad after recovering from a groin injury.
On the 4th of February, the 21-year-old winger underwent a successful surgery and spent weeks out recovering. Last week, he returned to full training with the rest of the team and later made the match day squad as the Spanish side travelled to Austria to take on Red Bull Salzburg in the first leg of the Europa League last 32 round.
Emery’s side won 2-0 at the Red Bull Arena to take a big advantage going back to Spain on Thursday evening.
Chukwueze has managed 22 games across all competitions with just two goals so far this season. With his injury woes now left behind, Emery hopes that the Nigerian will have a strong finish to the season and help the club do well in both the domestic and continental competitions.
“Samu has already joined, he was on the bench, warmed up and is, after a certain period of inactivity, closer to being able to count on him and reaching the demands and performance we want. He gives us more options,” said Emery.
So much has happened since Chukwueze’s last game in La Liga against Celta Vigo on the 8th of January. The Yellow Submarine has failed to win any of their five matches without their number 11 in the squad.
He recently broke a record for being the youngest player to make 100 appearances for the club and he will be eager to stretch that record towards the end of the season.
Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr will also be pleased to have the attacker back to full fitness before the 2021 Afcon qualifiers in March.
Villareal will host Salzburg on Thursday in the Europa League before a difficult trip to Atletico Madrid in the league on Sunday evening.
