Bundesliga side Union Berlin have announced the signing of Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi on a season-long loan from Liverpool.
The 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner has spent the last five years away from Liverpool on loan.
Immediately after joining the ‘Reds’ in 2015, Awoniyi was loaned out to FSV Frankfurt for the 2015-16 campaign.
The following seasons, he played for NEC Nijmegen in Netherlands and Royal Excel Mouscron and KAA Gent in Belgium.
Awoniyi made 12 appearances in the Bundesliga in the colours of Mainz 05 last season, netting a single goal.
The 23-year-old has failed to secure a place in Jurgen Klopp’s team for the 2020-21 season and has returned to Germany.
“I’m looking forward to a new home and the task at FC Union Berlin. Mainz was my second stop in Germany after Frankfurt and last year I was able to prove myself in the Bundesliga for the first time,” said Awoniyi.
“At Union, I want to take the next steps, play as much as possible, develop and help the team to stay in the league,” he added.
Oliver Ruhnert, Director for Professional Football at Union Berlin has described Awoniyi as a “highly talented player who already knows the Bundesliga.”
“He has already played in several countries and will certainly be settled in our team very quickly. With his physical robustness, his team spirit and work around the box. He should make our attacking game more flexible and further stimulate the attack,” concluded Ruhnert.
