Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu continued his hot form for Belgian Pro League side KRC Genk in the league on Wednesday night.
He scored his first hattrick of the season as the Belgian side started 2021 with a convincing 4-1 victory away from home against Kas Eupen.
This is proving to be the striker’s best season since his move to Belgium from Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland last year. He has featured in 40 league games for Genk and has scored 26 league goals so far.
Japanese winger Junya Ito opened the scoring just nine minutes into the game, but the hosts equalized five minutes later through Belgian midfielder Stef Peeters who brought them back into the game.
Onuachu put the visitors ahead three minutes before the break giving the Belgian giants some breathing space before going into the dressing room.
The forward hit a quick double in the second half through two penalties in the 48th and 63rd minute. Coach John van den Brom decided to rest the Man of the Match after a job well done.
Fellow Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers replaced his countryman and got his 14th league appearance this season. He will hope to get more minutes under his belt as he looks to build on the four goals he has scored so far this season.
Ivorian midfielder Eboue Kouassi was also in action for Genk pulling the strings in the middle of the park while Zimbabwean captain Knowledge Musona also started for Eupen.
Genk seem to have also found their rhythm after a slump 2019/20 season where they finished outside of the European qualifying spots. The club is now just one point behind log leaders Club Brugge who sit top of the log with 39 points from 19 games.
