Uthongathi missed out on the opportunity to move top of the GladAfrica Championship table as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Steenberg United at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.
In fact, second-placed Uthongathi nearly went back home empty-handed as they scored the equaliser in the dying minutes of the game through a Menzi Ndwandwe header to cancel out Colin Ryan’s opening goal in the first half.
Steenberg, who are also gunning for promotion to the Absa Premiership along with Uthongathi and Ajax Cape Town were left disappointed as they dropped crucial points at home as they threw away their 1 one lead towards the end.
“We could have easily moved to 35 points after defeating Uthongathi by a big score yesterday, but it was not meant to be. A 90-minute equaliser costed us two crucial points,” said Steenberg in a statement on the club’s official Facebook account.
“But life goes on, we move a point up. The boys played well created a number of chances, our finishing was very poor, or should I say luck was not on our side. Hitting the woodwork more than twice.
“There is no time to cry over spilt milk. It’s time to focus on our next game. There is still a long way to go. Thank you very much to our valued supporters for your support. We keep hoping that we will soon get back to our winning ways and finish at least in the top three.
Ajax are top of the log standings with 38 points, second-placed Uthongathi on 36 points and Steenberg, 33 while Swallows are not far behind on 31 in 4th place.
