Janine Van Wyk has been rewarded after a great season in Scotland.
The Banyana Banyana captain has been named in the Scottish Women’s Premier League Team of the Season after an impressive season with champions Glasgow City.
After initially struggling with injury in the first half of the season, the defender came back stronger in the second half and established herself as one of the key players for City who overcame all adversities to clinch the title.
City were officially crowned champions after a convincing 2-0 win against Glasgow Rangers on Sunday evening. They finished the season with 56 points from 21 games – three points clear of second-placed Celtic.
This was the defender’s first piece of silverware since making the move to the Scottish giants who managed to successfully defend the title and qualify for the Uefa Women’s Champions League once again.
Van Wyk’s teammate Hayley Lauder has also made the cut after a great campaign. Lauder was on the scoresheet in Sunday’s victory, netting one of the two crucial goals that propelled City to the title.
Ode Fulutudilu also played a big role scoring six league goals for the champions in the regular campaign.
It has been a remarkable season for South African women’s football with a couple of players making their mark abroad. Jermaine Seoposenwe won the Portuguese Cup with SC Braga while midfield maestro Refiloe Jane helped AC Milan qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
Eibar duo Thembi Kgatlana and Noko Matlou established themselves as regulars in the Spanish Primera Division and helped the club avoid relegation, while Sweden-based duo Linda Motlhalo and Hildah Magaia have started the season well playing every weekend for Djurgaden DFF and BK Moron respectively.
