New GladAfrica Championship side Venda Football Academy (VFA) chairman Itani Munzhelele has confirmed that the name of the club will change at the end of the 2021/22 season.
VFA will participate in the GladAfrica Championship during the upcoming season after purchasing the status of Cape United. They spent the past season playing in the Limpopo ABC Motsepe League.
The club is now based in Louis Trichardt and will share the Thohoyandou Stadium with Black Leopards as their home venue.
Munzhelele, who is a former employee at Leopards says their new name will resonate with a lot of football fans.
“The name will be changed. We are cooking something big which we will let you know in the next three months,” Munzhelele, told FARPost.
“This name will change once we have finalized what we are planning, let me not pre-empt now. But I can assure you, next season it will not be VFA but a name that will resonate with a number of people.
“The reason why we went with Venda Football Academy at the time is because one of the main objectives and ambition is to create the platform and mainly for the young talent. So, we will still remain with sort of an academy one way or the other,” he said.
“Our main existence is to develop these young boys so yes. Some people say when you mention Venda then you are marginalizing other people who are not Venda speaking. But as I always say, you have Manchester United, Liverpool, Orlando Pirates, Bloemfontein Celtic, they are named after an area. So why can’t we be proud of our things and origins? The bottom line is that people follow the vision, it is not about the name.”
Meanwhile, this publication can confirm that players such as Roggert Nyundu, Enocent Mkhabela, Ntokozo Mtsweni, Siphumelele Mbulu, Thabo Motlafi, Chris Matombo, McClive Phiri, Mthokozisi Nene, Terry Maphetho having been training with the club and are set to join ahead of the new season.
VFA will open their first division campaign with an away clash against Cape Town Spurs on Sunday, 22 August at Parow Park.
