Watford & Bournemouth relegated from EPL

Watford and Bournemouth have been relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

Sunday’s results mean the Hornets and the Cherries will join Norwich in the Championship next season, despite Bournemouth’s 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Villa had put themselves pole position in the bid to avoid the drop by beating Arsenal in their penultimate game, and their dramatic 1-1 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium means their status as a Premier League club is secure for another season.

At no point during the afternoon’s proceeding were Villa in the bottom three, and Jack Grealish’s 84th minute goal looked to have ended their season in style. His joy was short lived as Andriy Yarmolenko’s deflected effort drew West Ham level moments later, but the visitors point means that five-and-a-half months spent in the relegation zone counted for very little when it really mattered.

Up on Merseyside, Bournemouth put in one of their best performances of the season, but their 3-1 win over Carlo Ancelotti’s side was not enough to undo the damage caused by a dreadful run of form post-lockdown.

Josh King, Jefferson Lerma and Junior Stanislas were the Cherries’ goalscorers, but they will now head back to the Championship after five years.

As for Watford, they came into the final day as underdogs – having sacked Nigel Pearson before their final two games – and their return to the second tier was sealed despite a brave fightback against Arsenal, having gone 3-0 down in the first half.
