Steenberg have refuted claims that they have put their GladAfrica Championship status on sale.
Reports doing the rounds are that the Western Cape club are intending to forgo of the football business barely a season after their promotion from the ABC Motsepe League.
ABC Motsepe League clubs from various parts of the country have reportedly enquired about the status availability of the Parow Park-based club.
“I have received lot of calls saying we hear that you are selling. Everyone in the country knows that we are selling except for Steenberg FC,” team manager Simphiwe Clans tells FARPost.
“But obviously I have said it to many people that everyone has a price. Like I am saying to you now that I am not selling but if you offer to give me R50 million for my shoes then I can decide to give you my shoes, you know what I mean? But no Steenberg is not selling (its status),” insists Clans.
“People don’t say who they are representing but just call us and say we hear that you are selling, so we have people from Limpopo, Johannesburg, Pretoria, KZN, and Cape Town who know we are selling except for us.
“I reiterate, there are many people that have been calling us (with offers) saying we are selling. No, Steenberg is not selling at all and I still then reiterate that everyone has a price. If someone comes with an offer that is too good to refuse probably the owners will look at it but we are preparing for next season. Right now the promotion playoff spot is still there and we will fight and see where we end,” he adds.
Clans also shared his thoughts on the trend of buying PSL statuses and moving clubs to different regions.
“As I said to you earlier on, it is strictly business, you know what I mean? It is stickily business. We can’t fault the business owners for doing whatever it is to save their businesses.”
