Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has given an update on Naby Keita’s injury progress.
Keita has been out of action for a few weeks after getting injured in Liverpool’s clash against Crystal Palace last year.
The Guinean played an important role for the reigning Premier League champions as they went on to win 7-0 away from home.
Amongst other strengths, the former RB Leipzig star is excellent at bringing the Reds through transition phases when the ball is turned over. He can break down defences with his direct style of play and he is able to take players on.
He is also capable of threading passes through to the frontline and assisting goals.
In his absence the goals have dried up and that has left a lot of frustration among the supporters who are wishing for the return of their tricky creative maestro.
Speaking to the club’s official website on Wednesday morning, Klopp said the 25-year-year old is making progress, but the technical team has taken a decision to not rush him back to the squad.
“Naby is not ready for involvement. It’s not a big thing, it’s a little bit like with other players in the past when they came back from injuries and then because of the amount of games and situation in the squad they had to play.
“Then a little injury happened again. Now we just had to put on the brake and say, ‘Let’s settle it properly.’ In the moment we have alternatives in midfield, so we really try to give him all the time he needs to get 100% fit. That’s the situation, so no, he is not in contention.”
Keita has been under a bit of pressure to justify his high price tag and prove he is worthy of the famous number 8 shirt that Steven Gerrard was very confident enough to hand over to the midfielder upon his arrival at Anfield.
