The five-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon might be the superior team, higher on the latest Fifa rankings but that has not stopped Mozambique head coach Luís Gonçalves from believing that his men can beat The Indomitable Lions in the back-to-back 2022 Afcon qualifiers this month.
Gonçalves is confident that the Mozambique versus Cameroon showdown will live up to the David versus Goliath billing.
Cameroon will host Gonçalves’ men on Thursday, 12 November in Douala before travelling to Maputo for the second encounter a few days later on Monday, 16 November.
“We have a very strong group, we have team spirit, something fundamental for these games,” said Gonçalves.
“The spirit of this team is very strong, we have a very strong spirit and have some players who also play in Europe, players with quality. We will play eleven to eleven and our target is to win.
“If we are honest in our assessment, we see that Cameroon is a more powerful team than Mozambique,” admits Gonçalves.
“Just look at the players who normally make up this team and in which countries and clubs they play, what is the level of the leagues in which these clubs play. Naturally, despite the pandemic, its players have a different competitive pace, not to mention the quality of their team.”
The Mambas started their preparations yesterday with players from the domestic championship, while those who play abroad will join the team in Douala on 9 November.
Mozambique and Cameroon share Group F top spot with four points each, followed by Cape Verde with two, and Rwanda without any points.
