Weekend preview: Mzansi footballers abroad

The second weekend of the new year is packed with some exciting fixtures in countries across Europe.

FARPost previews some of the fixtures our stars will be involved in this weekend. 

ATHLETIC CLUB vs EIBAR SD  

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 

13:00 PM (SA TIME) 

On Wednesday afternoon, Banyana Banyana veteran Noko Matlou made a winning debut for SD Eibar in the Spanish Primera Division against EDF Logrono. The 35-year-old played the entire 90 minutes as Eibar won 2-0 at home. Having kept a clean sheet, the defender is expected to retain her place at the heart of the defence. 

Thembi Kgatlana also got the nod for a starting berth in that game and she continued her rich vein of form with yet another assist on the day – she is expected to get another start against Bilbao on Sunday. 

SAD BELENENSES vs PACOS FERREIRA 

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 

22:00 PM (SA TIME)

Sphephelo Sithole has become a regular starter for Belenenses having featured in all previous five of his club’s games in all competitions. Coach Nuno Oliveira has been building the team around the 21-year-old who plays in a deeper central defensive midfield role.

His countryman Thibang Phete will also be making a return from suspension after he received a red card against Maritimo three weeks ago. 

The duo will have to be on high alert as they hope to keep out their compatriot Luther Singh who will be a threat for the visitors upfront. Singh has played in all 12 of Perreira’s games this season. 

ABERDEEN vs GLASGOW RANGERS 

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 

17:00 PM (SA TIME)

 

Bongani Zungu is still searching for his first league start for Rangers this season. The former Vitoria Guimaraes anchor has played eight Scottish Premier League games coming off the bench for the Scottish giants. His only two starts have come in the UEFA Europa League and Scottish League Cup. 

Aberdeen will not be a walk-over for the log leaders as they sit in third position in the Premiership table. 

NEWPORT COUNTY vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 

21:45 PM (SA TIME)

After making headlines for his return to Brighton, striker Percy Tau will be eager to make a good first impression on Sunday for the English Premier League club. Graham Potter confirmed that the attacker will be available for the away cup clash against the League Two side in the third round of the English FA Cup. 

AGULA SCV vs BRAGA B  

SUNDAY 10 JANUARY 2021 

13:00 PM (SA TIME)

  

Kobamelo Kodisang has been in fine form for Braga in the Campeonato de Portugal and on Sunday he will be looking to continue his form as they travel to Agula in the league.
