Weekend wrap: Mzansi footballers abroad

A few of Mzansi’s stars were in action this past weekend across Europe, FARPost wraps up this weekend’s action of our overseas based footballers. 

BONGANI ZUNGU

  

On Sunday evening, Glasgow Rangers extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings by 22 points after a 2-1 win against Aberdeen away from home. 

South African midfielder Bongani Zungu was introduced for the last eight minutes of the game as the ‘Gers’ took a step closer to the title while maintaining their unbeaten run. 

PERCY TAU

 

The ‘Lion of Judah’ made his Brighton and Hove Albion debut just four days after returning to his parent club from Anderlecht. Tau was introduced after 71 minutes for Brighton as they won on penalties against League Two side Newport County after a 1-1 stalemate. 

Brighton had a scare after a nerve-wrecking shootout that could have gone either way. 

SPHEPHELO SITHOLE, THIBANG PHETE & LUTHER SINGH

  

It was a battle of three South Africans in the Portuguese Primeira Liga as Sithole and Phete’s SAD Belenenses took on Singh’s Pacos Ferreira late on Sunday evening. Luther Singh had the final say as Ferreira ran out 2-0 winners away from home. 

All three South Africans were eventually substituted in the second half of the game as Ferreira climbed up to 5th position on the log with 22 points after 13 games while Belenenses occupy 14th spot with 12 points from the same number of games. 

THABO CELE

 

KZN academy graduate Thabo Cele got yet another start for Cova di Piedade in the Portuguese Segunda Liga. Piedade lost 2-1 away against Vizela which saw them drop to 14th spot on the table with 16 points from 15 games. 

KOBAMELO KODISANG 

Kodisang continued his red-hot form with another Man of the Match performance for SC Braga B in the third division. The winger scored his 5th goal of the season as Braga won 4-0 against Aguaí. 

SIBUSISIO SHIBANE& GEORGE MATLOU

 Mabulala’ lasted the entire 90 minutes for Agueda as they were held to a draw 1-1 by A.D Sanjoanense. His countryman Matlou also started and got substituted in the second half of the game.  

KEAGAN DOLLY

  

Bafana Bafana winger Keagan Dolly came on for the last 10 minutes of the game as Montpellier were held to a 1-1 draw at home by FC Nantes in the France’s Ligue 1. 

NOKO MATLOU AND THEMBI KGATALANA 

The duo got yet another start for SD Eibar and played the entire 90 minutes as they beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 away from home in the Spanish Primera Division.
