Kaizer Chiefs might have failed to win a DStv Premiership match since October, but coach Gavin Hunt believes his men are making progress following arguably their most improved outing of the season against Bloemfontein Celtic at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
‘The Glamour Boys’ dropped two vital points at home against ‘Siwelele’ as they surrendered an early first half lead.
Anthony Akumu Agay opened the scoring eight minutes into the game but Chiefs were unable to kill off the game after missing a couple of chances.
In the blink of an eye, Celtic equalised and bagged a point as Tumelo Mangweni netted in the second half for Celtic.
Despite the draw and the poor, slow start to the 2020/21 season, Hunt feels there are signs of improvement ahead of the Christmas break.
“I thought good performance, first half very good you know. We’ve had some great opportunities, if you make it 2-0, 3-0 then it’s much easier,” said Hunt after the match.
“The longer it stays at 1-0, they had one chance the whole game and they scored. That’s pretty much what has been the story of our season so far. So disappointed but with what we have, you know we’re making progress.”
“They [Celtic] got pace when you have pace in your team, a lot of movement they always going to hurt you on a turnover, but we also turned over a few times, we had some good opportunities you know,” he added.
In eight league matches, Chiefs have won a single match, which came against Chippa United – three losses and four draws, but even more worrying is the fact that they have not won a match in six outings.
“Obviously you know up front, it is what it is. The result should be better, we all know that but there are signs, there’s certainly signs,” said Hunt.
“But you’re getting hurt with every little mistake, it’s a goal against you. I understand that in football, but you have to work a little bit harder then.”
‘Amakhosi’ will go into their crucial Caf Champions League second preliminary match against Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto at home on Wednesday with pressure on them.
