History favours Bafana against Sudan…


With Bafana Bafana set to host Sudan in the 2021 Afcon qualifiers on Sunday, Goal.com takes a look at the previous meetings between the two teams.

SA and Sudan are set to meet for only the third time and their previous two matches were competitive.

The first-ever match between Bafana Bafana and the Falcons of Jediane was on the 5th of September 2014.

Shakes Mashaba was in charge of Bafana in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier which took place at Al-Merreikh Stadium in Omdurman, Sudan.

The first time Bafana faced Sudan, Bongani Ndulula, Eric Mathoho, the late Senzo Meyiwa, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Dean Furman, Anele Ngcongca, Andile Jali, Mandla Masango, Thabo Matlaba, Keegan Dolly and Tokelo Rantie started for Bafana.

Bafana proved too strong for hosts as they secured an impressive 3-0 victory with Sibusiso Vilakazi playing a key role for the visitors.

The attacker grabbed a second half brace before Bongani Ndulula sealed South Africa’s win in the closing stages of the game.

The second game between South Africa and Sudan took place on the 15th of November 2014.

Sudan were seeking revenge ahead of their second clash which was played at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

This time Sudan produced a better performance as they succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bafana.

Thulani Serero and Tokelo Rantie grabbed two first-half goals, while Salah Al Jizoli netted the visitors’ late consolation goal and Bafana went on to qualify for the 2015 Afcon finals.
