Winning start for Seoposenwe

Banyana Banyana midfielder Jermaine Seoposenwe made her league debut on Monday night for Portuguese Campeonato Nacional Feminino side SC Braga as they defeated AD Ovarense 3-1 in their first league game of the season.

The former Gintra Universitetas midfielder started and played the entire 90 minutes for the Liga BPI club who sit comfortably in 3rd position after the first round of matches in the league.

Seoposennwe has been in Europe for the past year and has played for Gintra Universitetas in the Lithuanian top division before a short stint with Spanish top flight side Real Betis where she spent six months before joining Braga on a two-year deal in June.

Seoposenwe featured in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League making two appearances for Gintra. On top of her positive contributions in the Champions League she also helped the Lithuanian Champions win the 2019 LYGA women’s title and the domestic Amber Cup title.

The 26-year-old was at Gintra with Banyana Banyana teammate Nothando Vilakazi, but both players had to move in separate directions with Vilakazi now playing in Spain with EDF Logrono.

At Real Betis Seoposenwe did not get much opportunity to feature in many games with the season being interrupted by Covid-19 virus. She was able to make only two appearances for Betis in the league before her short contract ended.

The deal at Braga is long-term which offers stability under a coach who believes in her abilities which is good for the player’s progress in Portugal.

Elsewhere in Europe it was not a happy reunion for Thibang Phete who played 63 minutes as his Portuguese Primeira Liga side SAD Belenenses lost 2-1 at home against his former club Famalicao.

Phete picked up a yellow card while playing on the right side of defence for Belenenses who started their season with a win away at Guimaraes last week.

The South African U-23 international played another 90 minutes for Leicester City U-23 who lost a second game within a matter of a week as they fell to a 4-0 defeat away at Blackburn Rovers.

Leicester’s B team will be disappointed with this result having gone into the break with a 0-0 stalemate but lost the game in the second half with four quick fire goals.

Former Amajita captain Luke Le Roux started his 21st league game of the season for Swedish Allsvenskan side Varbergs BoIS as they drew 1-1 against Kakmar FF on Monday night. Varbergs remain 10th on the log standings with 27 points earned from 22 games. The new boys are almost guaranteed safety in their first ever season in the top flight.
