The Premier of KwaZulu Natal honourable Sihle Zikalala has announced that his government has endorsed COSAFA’s proposal to host the showpiece in the province for the next three years.
Zikalala was speaking at a Gala Dinner organized by EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda in honour of Durban football teams that are playing professional football.
Zikalala revealed that as the provincial government they want to promote access to sport.
“The provincial government of KwaZulu Natal endorsed the proposal of the Confederation Of Southern Africa Football to hold its annual showpiece, the COSAFA Cup in the province of KwaZulu Natal from 2021 to 2023.”
“We will support this to promote access to sports and to ensure that the province is always positioned and earn its marketing strategy, through hosting these sporting teams that will be participating.
“On top of that, I say this with no doubt, this is the only province which, when the league is to begin, invests in the local teams,” he said.
“It is KwaZulu Natal alone that invests through hosting the Premier’s Cup, which gives little incentives to the participating teams.
“But what is important about that is not the little incentives that we contribute, it’s the ownership that these are football clubs from KwaZulu Natal.
“Secondly, what is important is to ensure that when they go and start the league, they go having been ready.”
“We want to thank you, for holding the flag of South Africa high and of KwaZulu Natal, because if you represent us good, you will be representing our country.
“Soccer is one of those sport codes that continues to bring stability and social cohesion,” echoed Zikalala.
