Hakim Ziyech scored his second goal of the 2020/21 Uefa Champions League as Chelsea progressed to the last eight of the competition.
On Wednesday evening, the London club cruised to a 2-0 victory against Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge Stadium. Ziyech got a start alongside Kai Havertz and Timo Werner as the Blues were looking to build on their 1-0 away win in the first leg of the encounter.
Chelsea controlled the majority of the possession from the first whistle and it was no surprise when the Moroccan star put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead in the 34th minute after some good work by Werner down the left flank.
Madrid did not threaten Eduardo Mendy’s goal for most of the game. Joao Felix was their only threat, but the Portuguese attacker could not find a way to get past Mendy in goal. Italian left back Emerson Santos came off the bench and put the game beyond any doubt with a well-taken goal in additional time which ensured Chelsea’s progression to the quarter-final stage of the competition for the first time in seven years.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich also progressed to the last eight after a 2-1 victory in the second leg of their tie against Lazio. The defending champions progressed with an aggregate score of 6-2 having won the first leg 4-1 away from home.
Cameroonian striker Eric Choupo-Moting and Robert Lewandowski netted the goals for the home side before Marco Parolo pulled one back for the visitors in the 82nd minute of the game.
The Champions League quarter-final draw will take place on Friday the 19th of March at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
