AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu was among the the dignitaries as the club’s oldest supporter Mr Mjanyelwa Mthethwa celebrated his 100th birthday in Umbumbulu on Saturday.
The remarkable celebration took place as the team was playing their second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round against Nyasa Big Bullets in Bingu National Stadium, which they won 3-1 for a 3-2 aggregate score.
Zungu described Mthethwa’s centenary celebration as something astounding for everyone involved.
Usuthu’s eldest supporter Mthethwa was part of the people who supported the club when it was formed and he still remembers the events to the delight of Zungu, who appreciated the veteran supporter.
“For a team 89 years old to have a supporter who says I was 11 years old when this team was formed, it’s a blessing to us as AmaZulu family.
“We appreciate Mr Mthethwa and we are happy to have him as part of the club and we are thankful to him for supporting the club throughout all the challenges.
“To be here when he is celebrating a centenary, it’s a blessing to us as AmaZulu Football Club and it was even a treasure to us to be able to put a smile on his face.”
“That’s what it’s all about, it’s a great example that says if you respect your society, if you carry yourself with dignity as an upright member of society, God will bless you with longevity,” echoed Zungu.
“His story is a positive story all round and even better that on the day that he celebrated 100 years, AmaZulu were in Malawi. They left South African shores on a competitive basis, for the first time ever.
“What this really says is that discipline, focus and single-mindedness in terms of where you wanna be is very important,” added Zungu.
The club bought a cow and a cake for Mr Mthethwa to appreciate his support for the team during its entire existence.
