Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu played in his first ‘Old Firm’ derby between Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic on Saturday afternoon.
Rangers grabbed the city’s bragging rights with a narrow 1-0 victory at ‘Ibrox’, but it was a very important victory as it opened the gap between the two clubs by 19 points. Steven Gerrard’s side has been unplayable this season and remain undefeated after 22 league games played so far. Their only loss in the entire 2020/21 season came in the Scottish League Cup as they fell to a 3-2 defeat away at St. Mirren on the 12th of December.
It was a cagey derby with both sides attacking from the first whistle, but struggled to hit the back of the net. Celtic had more shots on goal with a total of 13 shots at goal while Rangers had 10 shots at goal. It took a 70th minute own goal from Callum McGregor to make a difference between the two sides after 90 minutes. The ‘Gers’ now have 62 points from 22 games played so far while Celtic have 43 points from 19 games.
Zungu was introduced for the last three minutes of the game to get his first feel of one of the oldest derbies in world football. He is yet to get his first league start for the Scottish giants although he has made a total of twelve appearances in all competitions this season in Scotland. The 28-year-old is in a race against time as he needs to make a big impression at ‘Ibrox’ to get a permanent deal with the club. The Bafana Bafana star is entering the last six months of his loan deal from SC Amiens.
Gerrard is closing in on his first league title as a manager and Rangers will be pleased to break Celtic’s dominance in the league after years of struggling to match their rivals on the domestic front.
