Bongani Zungu is one of five Glasgow Rangers players who have been removed from the squad after breaking Covid19 regulations.
The 28-year-old reportedly broke the strict regulations to attend a party and the club is set to take decisive action against him and other culprits.
Speaking to Rangers TV, Steven Gerrard expressed his disappointment at the behaviour of the players.
The Scottish Premiership log leaders travel to Belgium to take on Royal Antwerp in Antwerp in the first leg of the Uefa Europa League last 32.
“I think first and foremost, we have to acknowledge that five of our players have been involved in a breach of the Covid regulations, which, from the top of the club to the bottom, we are all really disappointed in.
“That will be dealt with internally and the players will be fined and we are in dialogue with the SFA and the government moving forward to find the solution in terms of those boys.
“They have been removed from the club and the squad for now on a short-term basis while they isolate and I will sit down with all of those boys face to face once we are allowed to do so.”
Asked about the identity of the players, the Liverpool legend revealed that the Bafana Bafana star was one of those players.
“Bongani Zungu is involved. Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey and Dapo (Mebude), who is obviously a part of the Academy and on loan at Queen of the South at the moment and a young goalkeeper who is an Academy player but has spent some time around the first team as well as Brian Kinnea.
“It won’t affect us as a group – I have been absolutely delighted with the group in terms of their application.
“I feel personally let down by recent events but, I am trying to move forward and focus on the important things which is to prepare the team for a huge game against Antwerp.
“I am really excited and looking forward to the game and so are the players – they have trained extremely well going into this game and it is important we focus on the important things which is the games that are in front of us.”
This is bad news for Zungu who has already been struggling to get regular game time since arriving at the club on loan from SC Amiens. Rangers remains undefeated this season and it remains to be seen if the midfielder will be able to bounce back and be involved after this incident.
