Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has given a fitness update on Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu ahead of the reverse fixture against SL Benfica in the UEFA Europa League.
The 28-year-old had missed out on Sunday’s game against Aberdeen as Rangers won 4-0 to extend their lead at the top of the log in the Scottish Premier League.
Zungu picked up a knock while on international duty with South Africa and Gerrard has since given some positive feedback on his fitness ahead of Thursday night’s clash.
“He has got a knock on his knee that we are assessing and checking out at the moment. We don’t think it is a big issue, so you could see him on Thursday hopefully.
“Don’t be surprised if he takes a little bit longer. it is not a big problem, it is only days rather than weeks or months,” explained Gerrard.
Rangers drew 3-3 last time out against the Portuguese giants and will be looking to get all three points at home in Glasgow.
Zungu has made just one appearance for Rangers so far coming on as a second half substitute in their emphatic 8-0 win against Hamilton two weeks ago. Having played in Portugal with Vitoria Guimaraes it would be a boost for Gerrard to have the midfielder in his team, although at the least he would be expected to make only the bench.
The South African would also be keen on getting into the team and fighting for his place with players like Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Joe Aribo all fit and fighting for their place in the team in his absence.
Zungu arrived at the club struggling with fitness before being handed his debut and another knock is a setback for him considering he must prove his worth in the team to make his deal with the club permanent.
He’s on loan from French outfit, Amiens.
