Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki has confirmed that midfielder Bongani Zungu will not be available for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Sudan as initially thought.
This comes after Zungu’s Scottish club Rangers stated that they will not release the player for the last match of the qualifier.
The 28-year-old was barred from travelling to South Africa for Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Ghana due to South Africa being a Covid-19 red zone country.
Zungu was due to join the rest of his teammates in Khartoum for the Group C match against Sudan but Ntseki has now confirmed that the midfielder is now ruled out of that match.
“On Wednesday we got an email from his club to say we are no longer releasing him, whether coming to South Africa or going to Sudan,” Ntseki said after the match.
“Then I spoke to him and he explained his situation to say it’s a decision that will work against him if ever he forced to go to Sudan. So again we saw a new list of countries that are referred to as red zones and in this case, we have Dubai which has been declared a red zone, Ethiopia so our players to come and join us in Sudan they were to go via Ethiopia or Dubai.
Meanwhile, Ntseki says they are still going to get a medical report on the injury to midfielder Andile Jali who was taken off in the first half of the match.
Bafana Bafana will play Sudan on Sunday at Al Hilal stadium starting at 18:00.
