Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu is set for his first start in the Europa League for Scottish side Glasgow Rangers as they take on Lech Poznan on Thursday night.
This is a big boost for the midfielder who only managed to play four minutes when Rangers beat Standard Liege 3-2 last Thursday to move top of the group on goal difference.
The ‘Gers’ are tied with SL Benfica on 11 points each and the group winners are going to be determined in the last round of matches on Thursday evening.
Speaking to the Scottish media ahead of the game, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard explained how important this opportunity is for Zungu who has been building momentum with the team since his arrival.
“He will be playing from the beginning, I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for him. We see this as a big game, an important game, it’s a game we’re looking forward to,” Gerrard explained.
The 28-year-old is happy with the opportunity he has been given, he feels he is settling in well with the rest of the team and adjusting to the coach’s tactics.
“Everything has been good, of course as a new player in the team it takes time to understand what the manager wants, but through training and the amount of game time I’ve been getting I’m slowly, but surely getting there so I’m settling down very good,” said Zungu.
Rangers have been doing well since the start of the 2020/21 season and Zungu said it’s important to continue the momentum. “For me, well the game is very important as the manager has said that we want to continue winning games. I feel good, I’ve been training very well and as I just said that I’m slowly, but surely getting to understand the tactics and what the game demands of me as well as the manager’s demands of me. I’m very excited for the game.
“We’re not going to take it lightly, we’re well prepared and it’s going to be a tough game – we’re looking forward to it,” concluded Zungu.
