Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has been slapped with a six-match ban by the Scottish Football Association.
Earlier this year, Zungu and five others were in hot water with Glasgow Rangers after breaching Covid19 protocols and attending a party.
Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey, Dapo Mebude, Brian Kinnear and the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder were all implicated in the incident. Rangers initially took a decision to remove the players from the squad and their futures were in doubt, but after issuing apologies they were allowed back into the team by coach Steven Gerrard.
Zungu went on to make appearances in the league and Europa League where the Scottish champions got knocked out by Slavia Prague in the last 16 round of the competition.
Two of the six games will be suspended until the end of the season while four games will be immediate.
The newly crowned Scottish champions still have a chance at a domestic double with the Scottish Cup still on the cards. They will take on Cove Rangers on the 4th of April as they look to complete the double and close the 2020/21 campaign in fine style.
It’s been a sad week for the 28-year-old who had to watch the national team on TV after the team blocked him from traveling to play for Bafana Bafana in the recent Afcon 2021 qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan.
After the draw against the Black Stars and a loss away in Sudan, Molefi Ntseki’s charges missed out on qualification to the continental showpiece scheduled to be played in Cameroon next year.
It is still not known whether Rangers will offer Zungu a permanent contract when his loan spell comes to an end in July, but his conduct in the next few weeks will determine his fate at Ibrox.
