Sundowns sporting director: Why we restructured panel

Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg has explained the restructuring of the coaching panel.

He says they took the decision to improve the team’s performance and ensure clarity in responsibilities.

Berg spoke to Mahlatse Mphalele of YouTube television channel Prime Sports over Rulani Mokwena’s promotion to head coach.

TAKING DECISIONS

“It is our responsibility as leaders to take brave decisions. To be a leader is about a lot of bravery and taking decisions at the right time,” he said.

Berg said they felt time had come for a new direction in playing style and responsibilities.

“We decided to do it because we felt we needed a new direction. And a clarity in responsibilities within the club,” he said.

“We think it will bring the team forward. Both in results and the way we play football to that direction that we want.”

The Dane revealed the club’s ultimate goal. He said it was for Sundowns “to become one of the best clubs in Africa.” He added they wanted to be a contender in all tournaments.”

“We believe these changes are the right ones for the club. That is what is our job as leaders is,” he added.

TEAM WORK

Berg said they believe in team-work. He added there was no need to attribute Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Maritzburg United to Mokwena only

He said all coaches and officials within the club think about delivering the goods for the club.

“It is all about what we can do for the club? The win is not for coach Rulani. It is a win for the coaching team, for the club in general and our fans,” he said.

Mokwena was upgraded from a co-coach role with Manqoba Mngqithi to a stand-alone head coach.

Mngqithi has since been demoted to senior coach replacing Steve Komphela who is now first-team coach.

The DStv Premiership champions made the changes days after an embarrassing 3-0 loss to MTN8 semifinal, second leg match.

Sundowns lead the DStv Premiership log table and are also in CAF Champions League contention.
