Hunt shell-shocked as Michael Owen visits SuperSport United

Coach Gavin Hunt was shell-shocked at the sight of England football legend Michael Owen visiting SuperSport United training ground on Thursday.

The SuperSport coach Hunt tweeted that he felt like he was dreaming when he saw the Liverpool great joining the team.

“Michael Owen himself. Got Michael Owen coming to training today am I dreaming,” he tweeted.

Hunt posted pictures posing with the former Real Madrid forward and other members of staff.

OWEN’S STELLAR CAREER FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY

Owen had a stellar career with the Three Lions notching 40 goals in 80 appearances spread from 1998 to 2008.

The 42-year-old is also a cult hero at Liverpool where he broke many records, as he bagged 116 goals in 218 appearances from 1996 to 2004.

The goal-poacher with instinctive finishes then went on to test himself on a grander scale against the Galactico of Real Madrid.

Owen did not replicate his form at the Santiago Bernabeu but he still did enough to leave memories in the Spanish La Liga.

The Englishman returned home in 2005 for a swansong at Newcastle United until 2009.

He then jumped ship to sign for Manchester United and played for them until 2012.

Owen then signed a one-year contract with Stoke City before retiring from playing a year later.

SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A TV PUNDIT

Owen has never been into serious coaching but he has now made a name as a top pundit for SkySports TV.

Owen’s visit to the Matsatsantsa camp has since generated interest on social media.

Reacting to Owen’s meeting with Hunt, football fan Zubair Taylor said: “You deserve this coach. Legend meets legend.”

Former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet also joined the conversation concerning Hunt and Owen.

“Remind him how good your crosses were. That he would have scored many more with you around,” the Cape Town City shot-stopped tweeted.

Keet worked under Hunt at Bidvest Wits before the custodian went abroad to pursue his professional career.

Owen is in South Africa to work as SuperSport TV pundit for the unfolding 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The Liverpool great is gracing SuperSport TV panel of analysts during the World Cup alongside former African Footballer of the Year Kalusha Bwalya, Spaniard Gaizka Mendieta and Ghanaian superstar Asamoah Gyan.
