Romain Folz addresses collapse of George Maluleka

AmaZulu head coach Romain Folz has addressed the collapse of George Maluleka during their DStv Premiership match against Swallows on Saturday.

Just a few weeks ago, the South African football fraternity mourned the passing of Richards Bay captain Siphamandla Mtolo who collapsed in training. Maluleka’s situation was another frightening scene just seconds before the match ended.

This is the second time this season he’s fallen while playing after it happened when Usuthu played against Sekhukhune United in December.

Folz says the club has to revisit the medical tests that they did with Maluleka earlier in the season to see if they can identify the issue.

“So, usually the heart situation and all those tests are [done] in the pre-season to check if everything is okay,” he said.

“So, I’d have to check on what [they did] before I see if there’s any tricky side in the results of what they did with him before the season started.

“Yes, ultimately, it’s the second time in a spell of six months. So, we need, one to be cautious, and two, to check what exactly is happening.

“Football is one thing and you saw what happened with one of the Richards Bay FC players recently.”

In giving the update on the state of the midfielder, Folz said he unfortunately had no information then.

“I don’t know yet, I just came from the on-field post-match interview, so I didn’t have time to go and check.

“But as soon as I’m done [with the presser], I’ll go check. But I hope he’s okay.

“It was concerning. I hope he’s fine.”

AmaZulu lost the match 1-0 with Kagiso Malinga’s first-half strike. This was their third defeat in a row in all competitions.

They are now 10th on the log standings with 28 points in the bag after 24 games. They are next on action against Cape Town City on Sunday, 09 April at the Cape Town Stadium at 17:30.
