How the end of 2023 could be crucial to Sundowns’ season

In what will be a busy four weeks, serial DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns face a crammed schedule that could be crucial to their season.

With an interesting and important period ahead, Mamelodi Sundowns are beset with nine matches until the end of December.

Six of them are DStv Premiership matches, while three are in the CAF Champions League. Sundowns, who are in second place on the log standings, already have four games in hand.

Interestingly, they have a perfect record, with 24 points in eight matches. How they will fare in their heavily congested fixture schedule remains to be seen.

But their DStv Premiership opponents will be angling to capitalise on any slip-up as they hope to reduce the gap.

At the moment Cape Town City FC are at the top of the standings, with 25 points after playing 13 games. SuperSport United are third with 22 points on their tally.

They are set to take on SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby on Wednesday; one of the most anticipated local matches. Kick-off is slated at 19h30. A win will see them return to pole position.

On 2 December, Rulani Mokwena and his men will travel to DR Congo for a date with TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League.

Four days later, they will switch back to the local league where they will face AmaZulu FC in Durban. That will followed by a match against Pyramids FC on 10 December.

Furthermore, Sundowns will host Cape Town Spurs on the 13th of December. That will be followed by a gruelling trip to Egypt where they will play Pyramids FC on the 19th.

In addition, they will play CT City, Moroka Swallows, and Polokwane City FC between 24 and 30 December.

Nevertheless, coach Rulani Mokwena believes his men are highly motivated to overcome the task.

“I’m happy with the level of motivation and energy that the players are showing and the level of seriousness also. I cannot downplay the other, knowing they are all important aspects,” Mokwena said.

Mokwena and his men are in high spirits after winning the maiden edition of the African Football League.
