Rulani drops hint over future of Promise Mkhuma at Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has offered some clues about the future of the academy graduate Promise Mkhuma at the club.

At the start of the season, Mkhuma was sent out on loan in the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the University of Pretoria in search of game time alongside Thabang Sibanyoni.

Mkhuma made his breakthrough to the Sundowns’ first team in the 2019/20 season at the age of 20 under former coach Pitso Mosimane. The 23-year-old was tipped as the club’s next big star coming from the academy. However he’s yet to impress Mokwena and the technical team at Chloorkop.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the talented winger was on loan at now-defunct All Stars FC before joining AmaTuks at the beginning of the season. Previously, he came close to joining Soweto side Moroka Swallows on loan. But the deal fell through because of Swallows’ transfer ban by FIFA at that time.

At AmaTuks in the second-tier league, Mkhuma has struggled for some minutes. The former SA Under-20 star has only made eight appearances in all competitions.

MOKWENA BELIEVES PROMISE MKHUMA HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PLAY FOR SUNDOWNS IN FUTURE

The Soweto-born mentor still believes that Mkhuma is a player for the future and has great potential for a successful football career at the club.

“He’s a kid that I admire a lot and very talented. I watched the last game [against Moroka Swallows in the Nedbank Cup]; he should have scored two goals, in fact,” said Mokwena.

“A very good player, one that we haven’t released. We think he’s got potential, and he’s got quality to represent Sundowns in the future.

“Hopefully, he can bounce back. No career is linear. Your trajectory is here from there; it’s straight. There’s ups and downs, and that’s life. That’s the same for Promise and all the youngsters.”
