Pirates provide worrying injury update on Thabiso Lebitso

Orlando Pirates have provided a worrying update on their in-form wing-back Thabiso Lebitso, who sustained an injury in an encounter against Royal AM on Sunday.

Lebisto left the pitch on a stretcher in the 17th minute when Pirates hammered Royal AM 4-0 in the DStv Premiership at the Harry Gwala Stadium in KZN.

The 32-year-old has established himself as a regular starter for Pirates since signing from Chippa United in January. He has featured in 10 matches across all competitions for the Buccaneers, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

The talented defender introduced himself to Pirates supporters in an audacious manner after netting a sublime goal in the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs last month. Pirates won the clash against Amakhosi 3-2.

Lebitso has been the preferred choice at right-back ahead of Thabiso Monyane and Bandile Shandu.

With Lebitso suffering an injury setback, Orlando Pirates has released a statement revealing that the star has broken a collarbone.

“The game between Orlando Pirates and Royal AM has brought mixed news,” the Soweto giants said on Sunday evening on their website.

“Just as Orlando Pirates celebrated a commanding 4-0 victory over Royal AM in an all-important DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers have suffered a significant setback with the injury to Thabiso Lebitso.

“The Bucs medical team has revealed to OrlandoPiratesfc.com that the 28-year-old right-back has suffered a broken collarbone, which requires surgical intervention. The prognosis of how long Lebitso will be out for will be known post his procedure.

Meanwhile, Pirates are looking to finish the campaign strong in second place in order to secure a spot in the CAF Champions League for next season.

Pirates are also in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, where they will face Chippa United. They aim to make it to the final on June 1, 2024, at Mbombela Stadium and defend their title.
